Vakil Mosque of Shiraz

Vakil Mosque is located in western side of Vakil Bazar and is one the most beautiful mosques in Iran constructed under the order of Karim Khan Zand.  This mosque has two east and south porches. The architects of Vakil Mosque have connected the corridors to the courtyard of the mosque in such a way that the qibla of the mosque corresponds to the religious qibla and on the other hand the facade of the mosque is in harmony with the side doors of the bazaar. This level of precision in architecture in the period that Iran was at the peak of prosperity in the field of architecture is admirable.

One of the most spectacular parts of Vakil mosque is the southern Shabestan. This place has 48 strong stone columns with special designs and patterns of Zandieh period. These columns are spiral and a symbol of Iranian art. In different parts of the mosque you can see the eye catching tile works. It has a 14-step pulpit. The stairs of this pulpit are made of marble stone by the rule of Karim Khan Zand in order to beautify this pulpit as much as possible.

Vakil Bath of Shiraz

Vakil Bath is another part of Vakil Complex which was constructed in Zandiey Dynasty. Everywhere you look in this traditional bathroom, you see a painting that reflects the magnificent architecture of that time. In the past time, Iranians went to these traditional baths for bathing, gathering, massage. Even some women proposed the girls for their sons in these baths.

When you enter this building, you will see a corridor and of course a porch that has a gentle slope. From this corridor you can enter the bathroom locker room. Due to this slope, air temperature is well exchanged between indoor and outdoor space. But this slope does not allow the cold weather of the outdoor environment to enter the bathroom easily and the heat of the indoor environment to come out of it and the energy will be saved. Vakil Bath had one of the most advanced and best architectural principles of the era and had different sections such as Shahneshin. The royal residences were used only for the king, and no one else was allowed to bathe in these places. There are other areas such as the public bathhouse, the treasury and the two ruling areas in this place. If you look at the middle part of each ruler, you will see a pool made of marble.

By his order, in the upper part of the gate, a space was set up to store the Qur’an so that, with the blessing of the Qur’an, travelers could spend their journey safely when they cross this gate. Over time, the building was destroyed until, during the reign of Karim Khan Zand, a new form of Quran gate was rebuilt and two Qurans were kept in the rooms above the gate.
